The Nicaraguan cigar industry traces its serious roots to the 1960s and 1970s, when Cuban cigar makers, displaced by the Cuban revolution and the subsequent US embargo on Cuban goods, began relocating to Nicaragua and other Central American countries, bringing their knowledge, their seeds, and their traditions with them. However, one of the distinct factors of Nicaragua's Condega region was the country's oldest tobacco family, the Ortez', who for already two-generations were working with premium tobacco plants as well as Virginia and barely strains. Nicaragua's soil and climate proved to be a natural home for Cuban seed tobacco, and the industry began to take shape.

The Nicaraguan civil war of the late 1970s and 1980s devastated the industry, destroying crops, displacing workers, and shutting down production for years. But the knowledge survived. The seeds survived. And when stability returned, the Nicaraguan cigar industry came back stronger, more determined, and more focused than ever.
